이름에 '두바이'가 붙었다는 이유만으로,
나는 그 쫀득하고 달콤한 환상의 질감을 찾아 사막의 중심부로 향했다.
낙타의 고집스러운 등 위에서 흔들리며 땀에 젖은 지폐 뭉치를 손에 꼭 쥐었다.
"두쫀쿠는 어디에 있습니까?"
내 서툰 물음은 뜨거운 모래바람에 흩어질 뿐이었다.
히잡 사이로 비치는 현지인의 눈동자엔 경멸조차 없는 순수한 의아함이 서려 있었다.
그곳에는 화려한 마천루와 끝없는 지평선은 있었으나,
내가 그토록 염원하던 '두바이 쫀득쿠키'는 어디에도 없었다.
그것은 오직 머나먼 타국의 갈망 속에서만 구워진, 이름뿐인 유령이었다.
빈손으로 돌아오는 길,
입안에는 모래 먼지보다 더 깔깔한 고독이 맴돌았다.
존재하지 않는 것을 찾아 국경을 넘는 일,
어쩌면 삶이란 그런 텅 빈 기호를 쫓아 사막을 헤매는 과정인지도 몰랐다.
