물고기가 물살을 뛰어 올라 용으로 변한다는 등용문(登龍門)의 고사를 그린 그림이다.
‘용문에 오르다’는 뜻인 등용문은 어려운 관문을 통과하여 출세에 이르거나 관(官)에 들어간다는 의미로 사용되었다. 중국 황하의 상류에 있는 급류인 ‘용문’을 잉어가 통과하게 되면 용으로 변하게 된다는 설화에서 비롯되었다.
조선시대에는 과거 급제가 사대부 남성들이 가장 출세하고 가문을 빛낼 수 있는 방법이었기 때문에 어변성룡은 과거 급제 혹은 출세를 상징하는 도상으로 인기가 높았으며 선조들은 과거 시험을 공부하면서 집안에다 장원급제를 바라는 의미로 '어변성룡도'를 걸어 두었다.
This is a painting depicting the ancient legend of Deungyongmun (登龍門), in which a fish jumps into the water and turns into a dragon.
Deungyongmun, which means “to climb the dragon gate,” was used to mean that one passes through a difficult gate to reach a career or enter a government. It is derived from the legend that when a carp passes through a torrent, the Dragon Gate, in the upper reaches of the Yellow River in China, it will turn into a dragon.
In the Joseon Dynasty, the past grade system was the most successful way for men of high ranks to become successful and brighten their families, so the Eobyun Seongryong was popular as a symbol of the past grade system or career advancement. 'Eobyeonseongryongdo' was hung.
魚が水肉を飛び上がって龍に変わるという登龍門の古事を描いた絵だ。
「龍門に上がる」という意味の登用門は、難しい関門を通過して出世に至ったり、官に入るという意味で使われた。 中国黄河の上流にある急流である「龍門」を鯉が通過すれば龍に変わるという説話から始まった。
