〈태양 아래의 낙서〉

이 그림은 카뮈의 『이방인』을 어린아이의 낙서처럼 표현한 작업이다.
하지만 여기서 ‘어린아이 같다’는 말은 단순히 미숙하거나 귀엽다는 뜻이 아니다.

뫼르소는 세계를 도덕이나 감정의 언어로 먼저 해석하지 않는다.
그는 슬퍼해야 할 자리에서 슬퍼하지 않고, 분노해야 할 순간에도 쉽게 분노하지 않는다. 대신 햇빛, 더위, 바다, 몸의 피로처럼 눈앞의 감각을 먼저 받아들인다.

이 점에서 뫼르소의 심리는 어린아이의 심리와 묘하게 닮아 있다.
어린아이는 아직 사회가 요구하는 감정의 순서를 완전히 익히지 못한 존재다. 죽음 앞에서 반드시 울어야 한다거나, 사랑을 말할 때 특정한 표정을 지어야 한다거나, 죄책감 앞에서 정해진 언어를 사용해야 한다는 규칙을 충분히 내면화하지 못한다.

뫼르소 역시 그런 규칙 바깥에 서 있다.
그의 무심함은 단순한 냉혹함이라기보다, 세계를 있는 그대로 감각하는 태도에 가깝다. 그래서 이 그림은 일부러 세련된 구도와 정교한 묘사를 피했다. 삐뚤어진 선, 과장된 태양, 비어 있는 표정은 뫼르소가 세계를 이해하는 방식, 그리고 어린아이가 아직 말로 다 정리하지 못한 채 세계를 마주하는 방식을 함께 드러낸다.

거대한 태양 아래 멀뚱히 서 있는 인물은 죄인이라기보다, 아직 감정의 문법을 배우지 못한 사람처럼 보인다.
그는 슬픔을 모른다기보다 슬픔을 어떻게 표현해야 하는지 모른다.

어쩌면 이 낙서 같은 그림은 『이방인』의 한 부분을 어린아이의 방식으로 쌔김질한 것일지도 모르겠다.
