노무현(Roh Moo-hyun/1946-2009)
국민과 민주주의를 사랑한 대한민국 16대 대통령
1946년 9월 1일 경남 김해시 진영읍 봉하마을에서 태어났다. 부산상고를 졸업하고, 사법시험에 합격해 판사로 재직하다 군사정권의 용공조작사건인 ‘부림사건’ 변론을 계기로 인권변호사가 되어 민주화운동에 참여했다.
1988년 13대 국회의원에 당선, 정치에 입문한 뒤 제5공화국비리조사특별위원회 위원으로 활동하면서 ‘청문회 스타’로 국민들의 각광을 받았다. 1990년 독재청산을 좌절시키고 지역주의를 노골화한 3당 합당(당시 4당 체제에서 집권여당과 두 야당이 합당)에 반대하며 야권통합을 주도해 민주당을 출범시켰다. 지역주의 극복과 국민통합은 이후 정치인 노무현 필생의 과제가 됐다.
1992년 14대 총선에서 부산에 출마해 낙선하고, 1995년 부산시장 선거와 1996년 15대 총선에서도 잇따라 고배를 마셨다.1998년 서울 종로구 국회의원 보궐선거에 당선되었으나 2000년 16대 총선 때는 지역주의 극복을 선언하며 다시 부산에서 출마해 낙선했다. 이로 인해 시민들로부터 ‘바보 노무현’이라는 별명을 얻었고 한국 최초의 정치인 팬클럽 ‘노사모’(노무현을 사랑하는 사람들의 모임)가 탄생했다.이후 국민의정부에서 해양수산부 장관을 지내고, 2002년 국민참여경선에서 ‘노풍’을 일으키며 새천년민주당 대통령후보로 선출, 16대 대통령에 당선됐다.
