어떤 철학자는 그 등장 이후 수 세기의 시대정신을 견인하기도 한다. 거시적으로 조망할 때 유럽 지성사는 그리스 문명으로 대변되는 고대, 교부 철학(신학)이 다스렸던 중세를 지나, 만물에 관한 전통적 종교적 설명 방식에서 탈피했으나 한편으로는 인간 이성의 합리성을 순진무구하게 신뢰했던 계몽주의적 근대를 거쳐 이성적 존재로서의 인간에 대해 냉소하여 모더니즘 및 포스트모더니즘 철학 사조가 발달한 현대로 정리할 수 있다. 현대성을 특징짓는 각종 철학적 테마에 관하여 19세기 독일 철학자 니체는 누구보다도 더 깊이 파고들어 지적 모험을 수행한 인물로 현재는 최초의 현대 철학자로 여겨지고 있다. 그는 철학을 하고 철학서를 집필했음에도 예술 작품의 전달법과 같은 은유적인 수사법으로 그 담론에 관한 다양한 해석의 여지를 열어 놓았으며 현대라는 시대를 있게 한 그라는 사람 자체에 관해서도 그런 시대적 의의에 대한 평가를 차치하면 최고의 철학자로 보는 입장에서 아예 철학자로 분류할 수 없다는 입장에 이르기까지 다양한 관점이 공존하고 있다. 프리드리히 빌헬름 니체는 1844년에 태어났다. 20세기가 시작된 1900년, 프리드리히 니체가 숨을 거뒀다.
There sometimes appear such philosophers whose ideas have enough strength to pioneer and also eventually drive the zeitgeists through several following centuries after their periods of activity. Considering on a large scale, European intellectual history can be summed up as follows: ancient, the era of Greek civilization; medieval, in which theology had held its dogmatic status; the Enlightenment where humanity had no longer relied on traditional religious worldview but meanwhile been still naive enough to count on an ideal of rationality and reason; and modernity in which humanity discovered its irrational edge and both modern and postmodern philosophies emerged. Nietzsche, also reputed to be the first contemporary philosopher, is considered as one of them representative modern philosophers who dug into a wide range of the modernity’s most significant themes, yet it is his intellectual journey that is considered to be the most profound one, in its depth. Despite being a philosopher who wrote philosophical works, his use of metaphorical and poetic language left room for diverse interpretations of his discourse. It is true that, without considering his historical importance and only regarding himself, opinions vary from the one taking him as the greatest philosopher ever lived to the one where he is not even taken as a philosopher at all. Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche was born in 1844 and in the year 1900, beginning of the 20th century, Friedrich Nietzsche drew his final breath.
