The young king of Goguryeo, Gwanggaeto, whose name is Damdeok and also known as "An," became king at the age of 18. He faced the terrifying nomadic tribe of the "Murong Xianbei" in the western part of Manchuria, Liaoxi, and the very powerful and cruel kingdom of Baekje in the southern part of the Korean peninsula. Moreover, he fought against the fearsome pirates across the sea, known as "Yamato" (vassals of Baekje), and defeated them all, reclaiming the ancient lands of Gojoseon, Liaodong, and Liaoxi, thus establishing the mighty empire of Goryeo in the plains of Manchuria.
